Fire Breaks Out at Mott Haven Deli — Then Spreads Fast

More than 100 firefighters responded to a blaze at a deli in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx early Wednesday morning. The FDNY was called just after 5 a.m. after reports of flames at a two-story building on Third Avenue between East 139th Street and East 140th Street. WSOC TV

The building was not just a deli. People lived there.

The two-alarm fire caused the roof to collapse but did not spread to other buildings. What it did do was trap people inside who never made it out. WSOC TV

Nearby resident Nea Jennings said she could hardly breathe when she was inside her apartment. “You could smell how bad it was. I thought it was a fire in my home, that’s how much you could smell the fire.” WSOC TV

The Death Toll Keeps Rising

The first hours suggested one tragedy. Days later, it has become something far worse.

After the flames were put out, fire crews found one man dead inside the building. On Thursday, firefighters found a second unidentified person dead, and a third on Friday during controlled demolition of the building. HERE Rockhill
